Dairy family branches out into sheep milk on the back of ‘impressive’ numbers
A Waikato family is among a handful taking the leap into a new dairy industry that could generate $250 million in export products by 2024.
Brothers Brad and Kieran White quit their corporate jobs after successfully pitching a new business idea to their parents, Paul and Dianne, to start a dairy sheep milking operation.
“We were looking for a succession plan, to get the boys into the dairy industry,” Paul White said.
Independent report cites exciting future for NZ Sheep Dairy
The report was undertaken by New Zealand Food Innovation South Island (Food South) with funding from the Provincial Growth Fund to highlight the opportunity for sheep milk in New Zealand. In summary, “mounting interest in non-bovine milks globally provides an opportunity for New Zealand to expand its dairy sheep sector and leverage its strengths as a producer of high quality dairy products”. The report goes on to suggest that “under the current model, expanding the industry through the production of high value products such as infant formula, has potential to increase the sector’s economic contribution to $250 million in 2024
Maui Milk welcomes Jon Sherlock to the team as GM Farming
For the last 8 years Jon has been running a 1100ha sheep & beef farming business in the North Waikato – 3500 breeding ewes, 300 heifers and 600 bulls. His home farm has been in the family for 3 generations.
Jon studied Ag Science at Massey and trained as an agriculture consultant in the late 1990’s and is currently a Farmer Councillor on the Mid-Northern Beef & Lamb Farmer Council. Before coming back to the home farm he owned and ran a livestock market information service called iFarm before selling the business to NZX Agri in 2015. Jon brings significant experience to the Maui Milk farming team and we are excited to have him on board!
Allan Browne puts first drop of milk in the Vat.
Maui Milk’s first supply farmer Allan Browne from Astra Farms put his first milk in the vat this week, check out this article about Allan and family feeling pretty chuffed with their first official tanker pick up docket! Maui Milk welcomes Tom Woutersen, Business Manager – Operations
Maui Milk are excited to be able to welcome Tom Woutersen to the team in the role of Business Manager – Operations. Tom joins us most recently from an Agri start up, Halter and has previous experience working in finance in NZ and in the UK
Maui Milk is pleased to announce the appointment of Leah Davey to the role of CEO.
Leah joins Maui Milk from DSM Nutritional Products where she has held the role of General Manager – Human Nutrition & Health, Oceania for the past 3 years. Prior to DSM, Leah held senior roles with Ixom Chemicals.
Leah holds a BTech honours degree in food technology and attended Stanford University in 2018 by being selected for the NZ Prime Minister’s scholarship.
Chairman Paul McGilvary welcomed Leah’s appointment saying, “she has a brilliant mix of commercial, technical and people skills”. Leah will spearhead a period of rapid growth; built around the supply of ingredients for Danone’s new sheep milk infant formula being sold under the Karicare™ brand along with driving the development of additional consumer products under the Maui Milk brand.
